For the Mountain Climber

ALABAMA-GEORGIA STATE LINE RIDE

With some of the most spectacular views in Alabama, the Alabama-Georgia State Line Ride follows a high ridgeline southward and then returns to the start on small winding country roads. Reaching an elevation of more than 1,500 feet, riders take in an open view of Alabama’s highest point, Mount Cheaha. A pass through the downtown business district of Wedowee presents a glimpse of mid-twentieth-century life. Finally, the route heads northeast through woodlands and small farms.

For the Metro Traveler

COOK SPRINGS, LOGAN MARTIN DAM, HWY 25 RIDE

Easily done in an afternoon from anywhere in the Birmingham area, this ride can be combined with a visit to Barber. Beginning on Interstate 20 at Cook Springs, riders travel along twisty back roads through hilly farmland to the shoreline of Logan Martin Lake. One segment is one of the most frequently traveled stretches by motorcyclists in the state, called the “Tail of the Lizard.”

OAK MOUNTAIN, HIGHWAY 25, MONTEVALLO RIDE

Beginning and ending near Oak Mountain State Park, this ride also crosses the Cahaba River and passes near Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park and the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. In late spring, a short side trip offers a rare view of blooming Cahaba Lilies. Riders pass through Wilsonville, Columbiana, Calera, and Montevallo along the way.

TALLADEGA NATIONAL FOREST ROAD RIDE

Covering some of the best roads in Alabama, this route for street bikes follows the ridgelines of the Talladega Mountains. With swift, sweeping turns, riders travel in and out of hills and woodlands. Scenic stops along the way include the Clay County Courthouse Square and the remains of the old Waldo Covered Bridge.

For the Weekend Mountain Tourist

CHEAHA STATE PARK DUAL-SPORT RIDE

A combination of road riding and gravel, this is a relatively easy ride for a dual-sport bike. Beginning and ending at Cheaha State Park, there are cabins, camping, and a hotel for lodging, plus a restaurant with a panoramic view. The route snakes its way through pastureland and wooded areas and past several roads leading to popular hiking trailheads.
