Earlier this month, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum held its annual volunteer appreciation dinner. Nearly three dozen of this year’s 120 volunteers attended the event, and each one received a certificate of merit denoting hours served.
In addition, four individuals were recognized with special awards:
1. Driven by Dedication: Mike Morgan
2. Premium Tour Leader: Jack Goertz
3.Spirit of Service: Dennis Flowers
4. Volunteer of the Year: Mary Fuglaar
“Every moment at the museum is powered by a group of amazing volunteers,” said Membership & Volunteer Manager Lindsey McLain. “We are excited to honor their dedication each year during our volunteer appreciation dinner.
“Our volunteers are the storytellers that guide our school groups and visitors throughout the exhibits, the friendly faces that ensure our vehicles remain safe and well-kept, and help us execute major events, such as IndyCar.
“We thank our volunteers,” she added, “for not just donating their time but creating memorable experiences for our guests and helping preserve motorsports history. I invite everyone to join our volunteer family by attending the next orientation on January 10th.”

When auction season rolls around and talk turns to rare Ducatis, as it often does, the Supermono is usually part of the conversation. Only 67 of the single-cylinder, race-only machines were manufactured some 30 years ago, with well-preserved examples now trading hands for six-figure prices.
Four years ago, Brian Case sat down with Pierre Terblanche to revisit the making of the Supermono, one of the South African’s most iconic designs. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum owns an immaculate, zero-mile example—No. 39. These days, Case is executive director of the museum and Terblanche is a resident mentor.
“What people have to realize is,” recalled Terblanche, “this was analog—zero computer. We did everything by hand, so the bike was modeled in clay. We had to make the tools, model the bike, then make it symmetrical, which is a huge task. We did it like they did the space shuttle, all on a drawing board.”

Did you know that the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum played an important role in the landmark 1998 exhibition “The Art of the Motorcycle” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City?
Co-curators Ultan Guilfoyle and Charles Falco had a list of 50 “must-have” motorcycles, without which they had little hope of achieving their lofty exhibition goals. Twenty-one of those machines were ultimately lent to the Guggenheim by the museum.
That seminal moment, Guilfoyle explains to host Mark Long on this episode of the “Driven to Ride” podcast, led to a relationship with the museum’s visionary founder George Barber, a relationship that continues to this day.

As Director of Museum Events and Programs Michael DeSocio detailed in his introduction during October’s annual “Motorcycles by Moonlight” gala dinner, Ally is an accomplished automotive and motorcycle restoration specialist.
Indeed, she holds a bachelor of science degree in automotive restoration and motorcycle technology, as well as a dual associate of applied-sciences degrees in automotive body repair and automotive technology.
Domar’s expertise covers all aspects of restoration, noted DeSocio, including body repair, paintwork, upholstery, mechanical systems, and historical research with a strong emphasis on authenticity, craftsmanship, and quality.
“We aim to set a new standard for how museums care for their collections,” Ally explained. “This is not just about polishing chrome or protecting paint. It’s about creating a long-term, sustainable approach to maintaining the integrity of every machine, part, and artifact in this building.”
To watch Domar’s speech in its entirety, as well as others recorded at this year’s 20th annual Barber Vintage Festival, follow the link in our bio to the “Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum” YouTube channel.

If you could drive three automobiles displayed in the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum for three laps of the 17-turn, 2.38-mile Barber Motorsports Park road course, which ones would you choose and why would you choose them?
We posed that question to Lee Clark, who has been part of the museum for more than three decades, including 10 years as restoration manager. Lee’s trio:
1. 1967 Lotus 49: “The Lotus 49 R1 under construction by Classic Team Lotus in England is an exact recreation of the ground-breaking design that dominated F1 for more than just one year—highly unusual in the day. It would naturally feel right at home on our track since it will be the crown jewel of our Lotus collection.”
2. 1984 Lotus 95T: “The weapon of choice for Team Lotus in the ’84 F1 calendar. Its 750-horsepower turbo engine was routinely juiced to over 1,000 hp for qualifying, making it a wicked car to do a lap or two at Barber. More power is always better, right? You can put that on my headstone if things go poorly.”
3. 1969 Porsche 908 Spyder: “This was the little brother to the 12-cylinder 917 LeMans car. The Spyder was built to handle tight corners of the Targa Florio-type hillclimbs of the day, as its smaller, lighter chassis used a 370-horsepower flat-eight. It will be an awesome car to drive around Barber once it`s completed.”

Twenty years ago, Ducati unveiled the Hypermotard at the International Exhibition of Cycles, Motorcycles, and Accessories in Milan, Italy, sending shock waves throughout motorcycling. Awarded “best of show,” the supermotard-style concept was designed by Pierre Terblanche, now a resident mentor at the Barber Advanced Design Center.
“My ideas were very clear about what this bike needed to be,” Terblanche told Cycle World magazine in 2007. “From Day 1, it was an extreme streetfighter—street performance in a new aesthetic package. Like a huge single on steroids, with very little weight, a cylinder added for low vibration, and an increase of 40 horsepower.”
The prototype reached production in 2008 as the Hypermotard 1100, an example of which is displayed on the fifth floor of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. All these years later, the Hypermotard remains an important member of Ducati’s model line, with the fourth-generation 2026 Hypermotard V2 introduced a few weeks ago at EICMA.
